Welcome

A Little Bit About Me

My name is Laura Ting and I’m a non-binary, mixed race, lifelong athlete. I’m a former lab analyst and scientist with a thorough understanding of the scientific method and principles, and evidence-based peer-reviewed bodies of knowledge. However, science does not exist in a vacuum and many of the euro-centric beauty and diet standards simply do not apply to bodies outside of the white cis-heteronormative binary in the same ways. I aim to help people connect with their bodies in multiple ways through various modalities. All of my work, both with myself and with clients, is with safety, awareness, and longevity in mind. I hope to bring self-compassion to mind-body connection and help you, not only connect with yourself, but to be gentle with yourself, as well.

My Philosophy

My goal is to help people feel better in and about their bodies. I apply scientific principles and frameworks for fitness and sports nutrition to LGBTQIANB+ and BIPOC people who want to feel affirmed, adored, and powerful in their bodies. I am a critical and compassionate guide, educator, and comrade who aims to help people understand their own bodies and its specific needs.

Occupying various intersections myself, not only shapes how I and others view my body, but also how I’m allowed to exist in certain spaces. The weight room of gyms can be an incredibly intimidating space to be in, especially for weak looking, gender-questioning, femme’s or anyone who isn’t a cis man. I wanted to create a space for other folks like me, who want to figure out the best way to feel their best -- whether that’s in a gym, or outside somehow. Where we can build a better relationship with our bodies, in a judgment-free space outside of white supremacist cis-het patriarchy.

To me, this means understanding and embodying resistance to so much of what society conditions us to believe about our bodies. Knowing that eurocentric beauty standards are anti-black and fatphobic, and then integrating those realizations into how we view our bodies. Knowing that much of western medicine, has come to be from violent medical experiments on Black, Indigenous and People of Color, so maybe *just maybe* some of the health standards are racist. As I got through my program textbooks, I got a deeper understanding of how much of fitness and diet standards are rooted in white supremacy. Many of the studies with evidence for certain methods of training, were only conducted on men; which excludes tons of varying bodies, effectively erasing them from data and research. I also came to realize that most of the nutrition standards are based on westernized American diets, which again, excludes variability for culture, and how bodies from different geographic regions may respond to food stimuli differently.

This is all to say, that my work is rooted firmly in individual variability, cultural understanding, and compassion. I believe that the only changes in our diets and exercise that will persist, are ones that we can integrate into our lifestyles. Diets don’t work. Starving yourself isn’t nice or healthy. And seeking to fill some euro-centric mold of beauty erases so much excellence and greatness. I am also working to increase accessibility because disabled folks should feel empowered and affirmed in their bodies too!

The three pillars of my practice are Fitness, Lifestyle, and Awareness.

To me, those mean a fitness regimen, beneficial lifestyle, and acute awareness of your body. In addition to my ISSA certifications, I am also trained in ergonomics, and while this may seem random in a fitness setting, it actually allows you to be more aware of your body during all of life's activities, including exercising, working, and even watching TV.

If you're motivated to get healthier, stronger, and more connected to your body, you've come to the right place.

As an ISSA-certified fitness professional, I can help you set realistic goals and transform your health and your life for the better. I can help you look and feel your best. And I can help you enjoy yourself along the way.
